Os primeiros lanzamentos de vídeo independente foron o antídoto revolucionario e DIY (do-it-yourself, faino ti mesmo) a un sistema televisivo que aínda se estaba preparando para a cuarta canal (Channel 4 comezou a emitir en novembro de 1982). Eludiron a censura e proporcionaron unha plataforma aos que estaban fóra do sistema. Esta ecléctica escolla inclúe un moi raro título de John Smith entre varios traballos de Scratch Video de The Duvet Brothers, Kim Flitcroft & Sandra Goldbacher, Gorilla Tapes e George Barber.
